Mr. V. R. Nedunchezhian (Minister of Education, Madras) was the chief guest at the event held to launch the Journal. The Journal was launched with an Editorial Board, composed of eminent mathematicians and scientists in India and abroad. The objective behind the Journal was to establish and maintain a publication in India for research papers of the highest quality. In the image, Prof. Alladi Ramakrishnan addresses the audience. Prof. Alladi Ramakrishnan’s earliest work was on ‘product densities and fluctuating density fields’ on which he published multiple papers. It was during a visit to the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton that he decided to start a similar institution in India. With the recommendation of Nobel laureate Niels Bohr and the support from the Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru and C. Subramaniam (Minister of Education, Law and Finance for Madras State), he created the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (Matscience) in 1962. Matscience is located in Taramani, adjacent to the IIT campus. Also seen in the image, seated on the dais from left: Prof. B. Sengupto (Director), Dr. A.L. Mudaliar, Mr. V. R. Nedunchezhian and Prof. S. D. Nigam (Head of the Mathematics Department).
