The photograph was probably taken outside the Student Activities Centre (SAC) building on the occasion of the 20th Convocation Day in 1983. Seen in the photograph are several dignitaries, the President of India and chief guest Mr. Giani Zail Singh (wearing white turban), Director of IIT Madras Prof. P. V. Indiresan (extreme left), Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Bombay Dr. Raja Ramanna (second from left), Chairman and Board of Governors of IIT Madras Mr. A. Sivasailam (third from left). The lady with her back turned is possibly the daughter of President Mr. Giani Zail Singh, Mrs. Manjit Kaur. (Yet to be confirmed). The other individuals in the photograph are yet to be identified. It is mentioned in the Annual Report of the year 1983-1984 that Dr. Raja Ramanna was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) on the day of the 20th Convocation.
