This photograph shows the front entrance to the Student Activities Centre (SAC) in 1983. The SAC was designed by the architect C. R. Narayana Rao (confirmed by P. Soundararaj). The photograph also shows a neatly decorated logo of IIT Madras made with flowers and plants. The number ‘25’ which is placed on the wall of the building is significant because the event marked 25 years since the establishment of the Institute. The Annual Report from 1983 shares interesting information about the Student Activities Centre. The building was reportedly completed at a cost of 90 lakhs. It contained a multipurpose auditorium cum stadium comprising an area of 4,400 square metres. The seating capacity was 2,500. The building was also made with the idea that it would provide facilities for indoor games on timber flooring. Apart from this, it was suitable for large meetings and functions.
