Inauguration of Alakananda Hostel by Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh, wife of the Governor of Madras, 1966

This photograph was taken on the occasion of the inauguration of Alakananda Hostel in 1966. It was also published in the April 1966 edition of Campastimes. This issue carried an article describing the event, which said, “Yet another river has been added to the road map of our Institute.” In the picture, from left: Mr. V. C. Jacob (Gymkhana Secretary), Sardar Ujjal Singh (Governor of Madras, in turban), Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy (Superintending Engineer), Mr. C. V. Sethunathan (Registrar, standing behind Mr. Ramaswamy), Director B. Sengupto (in glasses and dark suit), Sardarni Ujjal Singh (cutting ribbon) and Mrs. Shanti Sengupto, wife of Prof. Sengupto. Also seen in the picture are Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthi (behind Mrs. Singh) and Ms Janaki Seshadri (behind Mrs. Sengupto), one of the first two girl students to enrol in the 5-year B.Tech. programme at IIT Madras. Incidentally, the issue of Campastimes that described the inauguration of Alakananda also carried an article by the pioneering girl students.
