The building seen behind the people is probably the Building Sciences Block (BSB). Prior to the construction of the Administration Block in 1968, BSB was the main administrative building on campus. The first hostels on campus were Krishna and Cauvery in 1961-62. Following this, Narmada Hostel was built in the year 1962. In the year 1963-64, Saraswathi Hostel was built. Godavari and Tapti were also commissioned in this year. Ganga and Jamuna were completed in 1964-65. The ninth hostel, Alakananda was built in the year 1966. Seen in the photograph are (first row standing, from left) Mrs. Shanti Sengupto, wife of Prof. B. Sengupto (Director), chief guest Sardar Ujjal Singh (Governor of Madras) and Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh, wife of Sardar Ujjal Singh. In the second row (from left), Prof. E. G. Ramachandran, Prof. G. Stahl, two gentlemen (yet to be identified), Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthi, Prof. B. Sengupto (Director), Prof. Bisanz and Prof. S. D. Nigam. In the third row from left, Prof. R. It is likely that Director Sengupto received the Governor and his wife at BSB, after which the group proceeded to Alakananda Hostel for the inauguration.
