The photograph was taken on the occasion of the 20th Convocation Day in 1983. It was also the Silver Jubilee Year, wherein the Institute celebrated 25 years of establishment. The event took place in the Student Activities Centre (SAC).
The dignitaries at the dais are, (from left) Dr. Raja Ramanna, Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Bombay, Mr. A. Sivasailam, Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Madras, Mr. Giani Zail Singh, President of India and chief guest to the event, Mrs. Sheila Kaul, Union Minister for Education and Culture and Dr. H. V. Hande, Minister of Health. It is mentioned in the Annual Report of the year 1983-1984 that Dr. Raja Ramanna was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) on the day of the 20th Convocation.
