On the dais, from the left; Prof. S. Sampath, Prof. B. Sengupto, chief guest C. Rajagopalachari, Dr. A. L. Mudaliar, Prof. K. S. G. Doss (Director, CECRI) and Prof. P. C. Varghese. In his address, Rajagopalachari noted how IIT Madras’ method of providing practical training to its students, enables them to gain a foothold in their workspace more easily. He also said, “Boys and girls of our country should be trained from the start in using their hands and not brought up in an atmosphere of pure brain work. They must be taught to think with their hands as all craftsmen do”. Rajagopalachari stressed on the importance of pairing theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Following his speech, he congratulated all the graduates of the institute. The microphones have tags of ‘AIR’, which stands for All India Radio. It is possible that All India Radio, might have been recording the function at the time.

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
