This photograph was taken on the 20th Convocation Day of IIT Madras in 1983. The academic procession is a tradition where dignitaries wear convocation robes and enter the convocation hall before the event proceeds. Seen in the photograph, leading the academic procession Mr. Santhana Gopalan (Registrar) and behind him, Dr. L. V. L. N Sarma (Humanities and Social Sciences, Senate Invitee), Prof. Udupa (Chemistry), Dr. Siddaveere Gowda (Applied Mechanics, Senate Invitee), Dr. C. K. Narayanaswamy (Physics, Senate Invitee), Prof. Venkatarayulu (Mechanical Engineering), Prof. Ambirajan (Humanities and Social Sciences), Prof. B. Yegnanarayana (Computer Science and Engineering), Prof. Radhakrishna (Physics), Prof. N. Rajagopalan (Civil Engineering) and former Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras Mr. A. M. M. Arunachalam (wearing a grey suit). Behind Prof. Yegnanarayana are (first two persons almost completely hidden), Prof. M. A. Veluswamy (Applied Mechanics) and Prof. R. S. Srinivasan (Applied Mechanics), Prof. C. S. Krishnamurthi (Civil Engineering) and Prof. Subramanyan Sankaran (RSIC).
