The chief guest and President of India Mr. Giani Zail Singh, seen on the day of the 20th Convocation of IIT Madras in 1983. Mr. Singh was the seventh President of India, serving his term from 1982 to 1987. He also held several other important posts in his political career, such as Minister of Home Affairs (1980 to 1982), ninth Chief Minister of Punjab (1972 to 1977) and Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (1983 to 1986).
