The photograph was taken when the chief guest and President of India Mr. Giani Zail Singh arrived at the venue for the event in 1983. He arrived with a motorcade as seen in the photograph. The event also marked 25 years since the founding of IIT Madras. It was the Silver Jubilee Year of IIT Madras, and one of the main events was the opening of the Student Activities Centre (SAC), a new building which was built for the purpose of holding meetings, functions and conducting sports.
