The photograph was taken in 1983, possibly outside or near the venue which was the Student Activities Centre (SAC) on the occasion of the 20th Convocation Day celebrations in IIT Madras. A miniature flag of India and the emblem of the Government of India is placed on the bonnet of the car. The car has been identified as a Hindustan Contessa, from Hindustan Motors.
