This photograph was taken on the 20th Convocation Day of IIT Madras in 1983. Dr. Ramanna was an Indian Physicist, who was known for his role in India’s nuclear program in 1964. The nuclear program was in its early stages at the time. It is mentioned in the Annual Report of the year 1983-1984 that Dr. Raja Ramanna was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) on the day of the 20th Convocation. Also seen in the photograph are (on dais from right) Minister of Health Dr. H. V. Hande, Union Minister for Education and Culture Mrs. Sheila Kaul and chief guest and President of India Mr. Giani Zail Singh.
